Worked example
A bare .aac file is a raw stream with no container, which is occasionally what a device or workflow demands.
| Extension | .aac |
|---|---|
| MIME type | audio/aac |
| Playback | Limited support |
| From MP4 without re-encoding | No |
| Audio codec | aac |
The equivalent command
ffmpeg -i holiday-clip.mp4 -vn -c:a aac -b:a 192k -threads 1 -y out-holiday-clip.aac
This is exactly what runs in the browser. Copy it to run the same job locally on a file too large for a tab.
Why it matters
Most of the time an AAC stream should live inside an M4A container, which carries duration, seeking information and metadata. A raw .aac has none of that, so players cannot seek it reliably and some will not open it at all. It exists for broadcast and embedded workflows that expect exactly this; if you are not sure, M4A is the better choice.
