Convert audio to FLAC

Free, no sign-up, and nothing is uploaded.
Worked example
FLAC is lossless like WAV but roughly half the size, which makes it the sensible archive format.
| Extension | .flac |
|---|---|
| MIME type | audio/flac |
| Playback | Limited support |
| From MP4 without re-encoding | No |
| Audio codec | flac |
The equivalent command
ffmpeg -i holiday-clip.mp4 -vn -c:a flac -threads 1 -y out-holiday-clip.flac
This is exactly what runs in the browser. Copy it to run the same job locally on a file too large for a tab.
Why it matters
FLAC compresses audio the way ZIP compresses a document: the original samples come back bit-for-bit identical. Typically it reaches 50 to 60 percent of the WAV size, with no quality question to argue about. The only reasons to prefer WAV are software that cannot read FLAC and the fact that WAV needs no encoder at all.
