Worked example
Opus beats every other codec here at low bitrates, and is the one most old devices will not play.
| Extension | .opus |
|---|---|
| MIME type | audio/ogg |
| Playback | Limited support |
| From MP4 without re-encoding | No |
| Audio codec | libopus |
The equivalent command
ffmpeg -i holiday-clip.mp4 -vn -c:a libopus -b:a 128k -threads 1 -y out-holiday-clip.opus
This is exactly what runs in the browser. Copy it to run the same job locally on a file too large for a tab.
Why it matters
Opus is remarkable for speech: at 64 kbps it is close to transparent, where MP3 needs roughly twice that to sound as good. It is the codec WebRTC and Discord use, and it is excellent for podcasts. The catch is reach — support outside browsers and recent phones is patchy, so it is the right choice for the web and the wrong one for a car stereo.
