Worked example
WAV is the one output this tool can write with no engine download, because an uncompressed file needs no encoder.
| Extension | .wav |
|---|---|
| MIME type | audio/wav |
| Playback | Plays everywhere |
| From MP4 without re-encoding | No |
| Audio codec | pcm_s16le |
The equivalent command
ffmpeg -i holiday-clip.mp4 -vn -c:a pcm_s16le -threads 1 -y out-holiday-clip.wav
This is exactly what runs in the browser. Copy it to run the same job locally on a file too large for a tab.
Why it matters
A WAV file is a 44-byte header followed by raw samples, which is why the browser can produce one directly from decoded audio. That makes every WAV job here instant and lossless — and large: about 10 MB per stereo minute at 16-bit. It is the right format for editing and for feeding into other software, and the wrong one for sharing or storage.
